Summary
When you set up a wallet in your Gala Games and Entertainment account, a unique private key is generated that only you have access to. This alphanumeric string of characters acts as a secret code, allowing you to access and control your wallet and associated assets. While the recovery phrase can be used to access the wallet and set up a transfer code, the private key can only be used to access the wallet itself.
Types of Private Keys in the Gala Ecosystem
There are two types of private keys in the Gala Games and Entertainment ecosystem. Most users will have a GalaChain Private Key, but some older legacy wallets will have an Ethereum Private Key as well. These different private keys can be found in your account settings.
1. Ethereum Private Key:
The Ethereum Private Key is a unique identifier tied specifically to a user's Ethereum wallet. This key allows the user to import their Ethereum wallet to a web3 wallet application, such as MetaMask or Coinbase. By using the Ethereum Private Key, users can manage their Ethereum-based assets and interact with other decentralized applications (dApps) that support Ethereum wallets.
2. GalaChain Private Key:
The GalaChain Private Key is a unique identifier tied specifically to a user's GalaChain wallet. At this time, the GalaChain Private Key cannot be used anywhere else. As the Gala Games and Entertainment platform continues to evolve and develop its blockchain infrastructure, additional information regarding how users can use their GalaChain Private Key will be made available.
To download your Private Key from your account settings, follow these simple steps:
1. Click on your profile picture.
2. Select Account.
3. Scroll down to the Security tab. Click on the private key you wish to download, then click on Download Private Key.
4. Enter your transfer code to initiate the download.
5. A text file containing the private key will be downloaded.
Given the critical role of private keys in securing your wallets, it is crucial to follow best practices for safeguarding it. Always store your private key in a secure location, preferably offline. Consider creating multiple backups of your private key to ensure that you can access your wallet even if one copy is lost or damaged. However, be cautious when creating backups, as storing them on internet-connected devices or easily accessible locations can compromise your wallet's security.
